The Numbers: Downs Enjoy Superiority Over Bucs

Orlando Pirates aim to turn things around to change Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance over them in their match on Wednesday. The Buccaneers will welcome Sundowns at the Orlando Stadium when they meet in their Absa Premiership match. In recent seasons, Sundowns have been dominant over Pirates when they visit them in their home ground. Last season, The Brazilians beat Pirates 2-0 in their league match at Orlando. Under Milutin Sredojevic, whose work in trying to turn things around for the Soweto giants since arriving at the club in August has been evident, Bucs aim to upset Downs for their first win over them since 2014. We’re Going There For A Win

This week, we hear from Supporters Club Committee Member Masilo Machaka on the TKO last 16 results, as well as the upcoming quarter-final round.     On the Telkom Knockout Last 16 results    Firstly, I’ll start off with the encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu. I think the Chiefs players played their hearts out, they showed character on the day and there was unity amongst them. They played for the badge of Kaizer Chiefs and I commend them for that. What really caught me by surprise though was the game between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns. Who would have thought that Sundowns would be knocked out of the tournament in the early stages? I don’t know how their supporters are feeling after the performances of their beloved team over the past few weeks and I’m sure they are asking themselves, ‘What’s next?’ They are out of the Telkom Knockout, but that’s football. Football is unpredictable – you win some and you lose some. Ha...

Keep Politics Away From Soccer

This past weekend we noticed, once again, another capacity crowd at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium where Chippa United hosted Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout Last 16. If the rumours doing the rounds are anything to go by, that could have been the last game played at the venue under the auspices of the Absa Premiership, at least this season.    Word has it that the Buffalo City Municipality has reneged on their contract to have the Nelson Mandela Bay-based club play some of their games in the City. We are talking just over 300kms distance and, with Chippa being the only PSL team in the province, it made perfect sense to have them spread across the province. To add salt to the wound, this partnership between Chippa and the City was taking the game back to the people in an era where we are greeted by mostly empty stadiums in almost every game. The results of this initiative are there for everyone to see. Even those who were against this idea, ma...

Komphela: We Have To Look Forward

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Steve Komphela says his charges must move on from the goalless draw with Polokwane City. The AmaKhosi registered their second straight goalless draw on Tuesday evening, as they missed the chance to move top of the Absa Premiership log. "Polokwane City didn't make it easy for us in as much as we controlled the game. "There was a chance with Ramagalela with a header inside the box and another one where (Rendani) Ndou had a turn inside the box, Itu (Khune) kept us in the game. We also had chances where I think the match could have gone either way. "We always want to win every match it's just a pity we couldn't win this one. We have to look forward, there's nothing we can do about this 90 minutes it's gone. "We have to look back and check what areas we could have done better. There's one chance of Pule Ekstein and another from Shabba, those chances do count. You get one of those chances ...

We had a fair chance to win – Khomphela

“Foremost, my compliments to Polokwane City,” Steve Komphela reflects on the goalless draw against Polokwane City last night. “The match was tense and I thought it could have gone either way. We had chances – for Bernard Parker, Dumsani Zuma and Pule Ekstein, while Siphiwe Tshabalala hit the bar. “If you look at the log, it’s not easy to get points, it is tight. We wanted to wrap up the match early on to save legs in this tight schedule, but our finishing continues to be a work in progress.” The Kaizer Chiefs coach heaped praise on his team for a brave showing, despite not being able to finish the opportunities they created. “George Maluleka works hard, he is defending and attacking very well,” Komphela commented on the in-form midfielder with jersey number 12. “I am also happy with Philani Zulu’s performances, although credit must go to the whole team. “More training, matches and positive results will help build confidence. It is clicking, we must just get more wins and things will...

Chiefs and City share the points

Kaizer Chiefs                          0 AmaZulu                                  0 What Happened? Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership match at Polokwane’s New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening. Amakhosi had most of the chances, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Lorenzo Gordinho came back into the side, replacing Siyabonga Ngezana, who got a break to concentrate on his Matric exams. Gordinho missed a few matches due to a rib injury. Polokwane played at home and they were not afraid to attack. It resulted in the first goalscoring opportunity coming the way of Rise and Shine. However, overall, Chiefs had the better first half, looking the m...

Gordinho replaces Ngezana

Siyabonga Ngezana has done brilliantly since making his debut against Mamelodi Sundowns. The youngster, however, is not only playing soccer, he’s focused on his school work as well. The defender therefore has to miss tonight’s Absa Premiership fixture against Polokwane City as he’s busy writing exams. Lorenzo Gordinho, who has recovered from his rib injury, replaces Nengezana in the centre of defence. Otherwise, coach Steve Komphela has decided to go with the same starting line-up that convincingly beat AmaZulu in the weekend. Polowane City host Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium this Tuesday evening (kick-off is at 19:30). Chiefs’ line up: Khune, captain (32); Cardoso (4), Mathoho (3), Gordinho (26), Zulu (22); Molangoane (23), Katsande (31), Maluleka (12), Tshabalala (14); Ekstein (27), Parker (25) Subs: Khuzwayo (16), Jayiya (6), Moon (29), Chirambadare (11), Meyiwa (38), Zuma (28), Páez (9) Coach: Steve Komphela Polokwane’s line up: Chigov...

We are progressing well – Komphela

“We are progressing well with our process,” coach Steve Komphela says about the recent positive results, including Saturday’s 3-0 win over AmaZulu. “It’s important to get the three points with a good performance. I believe we are playing much better now.” The Kaizer Chiefs coach and his troops headed north yesterday to face the unpredictable Polokwane City in an Absa Premiership fixture at New Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight (kick-off is at 19:30). “We played on Saturday and the team basically only had Sunday to recuperate and refresh their bodies,” Komphela comments. “With back to back matches the margin of error increases. It’s about rest and pre-match.” “We want to continue our winning ways. I thought that we needed to be a bit more clinical in front of goal in Durban, as we could have won with an avalanche of goals. Polokwane City are a good side and they have some brilliant individuals to watch.” City’s Rodney Ramagalela in attack and Jabu Maluleke in midfield always pose a thre...
