It’s about continuity – Komphela

“This is a different ball game,” comments coach Steve Komphela ahead of Saturday night’s Telkom Knockout Last 16 fixture against AmaZulu at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.  “A knockout competition poses different challenges. What’s important is that we continue with what we have been doing.”

Kaizer Chiefs collected four points from their last two league matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

“We have prepared accordingly for this one,” Komphela adds. “Much has been said about AmaZulu’s abilities, but despite this we are focused on our own preparedness. We are sharp and the players have responded well to the preparations for this match.”

Amakhosi and Usuthu last locked horns in a league clash on 9 April 2015. That was before AmaZulu got relegated to the first division. The Glamour Boys won thanks to a goal from Bernard Parker in the 18th minute.

“We have Lorenzo back in the squad,” confirms Komphela, referring to Gordinho, who has been out with a fractured rib. “We are happy to have him back. However, don’t forget how well Ngezana did in his absence.”

Siyabonga Ngezana showed great form on his debut against Sundowns and in the following encounter against Pirates.

“Siya travelled with the squad, despite having written exams on Friday,” Komphela says. “That was possible because we have a development program that fuses football and academics. We are supporting him to do well both on the field and at school.”

William Twala, meanwhile, didn’t travel with the squad due to a slight injury.

“We are ready and look forward to get on with the business,” Komphela concludes. “We have their script. They have a good coach in Cavin Johnson and great players with experience in Siyabonga Nomvethe and Mabhuti Khenyeza. We are ready for all those factors.”

The stage is set for one of the traditional encounters in South African.  Football matches don’t come as tantalising as this one between Amakhosi and Usuthu.

Chiefs host AmaZulu at home away from home at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 28 October (kick-off is at 20:15).

The Numbers: How Masuluke Lost To Arsenal Star

Oscarine Masuluke finished in second place according to numbers of votes for the goal that was nominated for the 2017 FIFA Puskas Awards, according to the South African Football Association. The Baroka FC goalkeeper’s goal made was in the final three of this year’s Puskas awards alongside Venezuelan starlet Deyna Castellanos, as well as the eventual winner in Olivier Giroud of Arsenal. SAFA confirmed how Masuluke’s goal did against some of the stars from big clubs from around the world. “After making the final cut of the 2017 FIFA Puskas awards, Baroka FC goalkeeper, Oscarine Masuluke was narrowly pipped by Arsenal and French forward Olivier Giroud at the awards ceremony held on Tuesday evening in London. “Masuluke’s breathtaking overhead kick against Orlando Pirates which even got a vote from athletics superstar Usain Bolt earned him a place at the glittering awards ceremony where he rubbed shoulders with world superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lione...

Vilakazi: It’s Been A While Since Sundowns Tasted Glory

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Sibusiso Vilakazi says that is has been a while since the Brazilians tasted glory but they will try their best to go all out and claim the Telkom Knockout Cup this season. Sundowns will lock horns with Chippa United later this month, October, in the round of 16 of the Telkom Knockout competition, with Head Coach Pitso Mosimane’s side keen to retain the trophy which they last won in 2015. Speaking after the TKO draw took place, Vilakazi revealed that after Sundowns failed to progress further than the quarter-final stages of the MTN8 competition, the Telkom Knockout will be an opportunity for the Chloorkop-based club to dust themselves off.  “It’s been a while since we tasted glory, in the form of a trophy on the domestic league. We will try by all means to get this one for the team, for ourselves and for the supporters. But with that said, we aren’t looking forward too much. We will take it one game at a time. First, there is Chip...

We’re Going There For A Win

This week, we hear from Supporters Club Committee Member Masilo Machaka on the TKO last 16 results, as well as the upcoming quarter-final round.     On the Telkom Knockout Last 16 results    Firstly, I’ll start off with the encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu. I think the Chiefs players played their hearts out, they showed character on the day and there was unity amongst them. They played for the badge of Kaizer Chiefs and I commend them for that. What really caught me by surprise though was the game between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns. Who would have thought that Sundowns would be knocked out of the tournament in the early stages? I don’t know how their supporters are feeling after the performances of their beloved team over the past few weeks and I’m sure they are asking themselves, ‘What’s next?’ They are out of the Telkom Knockout, but that’s football. Football is unpredictable – you win some and you lose some. Ha...
