The South African Football Association is believed to have submitted their appeal regarding Bongani Zungu’s sending off against Burkina Faso, and now await FIFA’s response.
Zungu was given a red card for violent conduct during Bafana Bafana’s
3-1 win over the Burkinabe earlier this month, however, replays clearly
showed that the 25-year-old was retaliating after being elbowed by Alain
Traore.
Now, according to Siya sources, SAFA has made an appeal for the red
card to be rescinded, and they will no doubt be looking for Traore – who
wasn’t even booked, to be punished retroactively.
FIFA recently extended Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho’s ban from one game to two
games after his kick at a Cape Verde player in a World Cup qualifier,
suggesting that action could well be taken against Traore even if
Zungu’s red isn’t rescinded.
Bafana will already be without Andile Jali going into the first clash
with Senegal next month, but it appears that SAFA is hopeful that Zungu,
who players for Amiens in France, could stand a chance of still being
part of Stuart Baxter’s side.
